Forming and understanding Relationships is the key to happiness and fulfillment. Relationships are not confined to same 'species' entities. Relationships nurtured between humans and animals are just as important & fulfilling as those with our own species. The relationship between humans and their companion animals holds as much as, and in some cases more joy and fulfillment than 'human' relationships. For many humans, having respect, admiration and love for humans and companion animals alike, is not governed by the age, or health condition of a fellow family member.
All Living entities experience death.
Humans have a desire to take care of, and provide love and support as a 'loved one' transitions from this life, to the next.
Our companion animal becomes an important and cherished part of our life--of our family.
It is quite impossible to think of ourselves as being unaffected by another species that we have chosen to share 'ourselves' with.
Our 'dog' has been with us through thick and thin. If necessary many of us would sacrifice ourselves for our 'dog'.
We are only able to love another to the extent that we learn about, accept, like and love ourself. Without attaining 'Authenticity' which is the result of this process we will not be able to continue to provide care, support, genuine affection and love towards any species including our own throughout their process of aging, sickness, dying and death. To be Authentic means that we in fact are both capable and willing to commit to another's well-being while knowing and valuing each others' differences. Authenticity also involves the ability to create meaning in our life irrespective of the challenges facing us and our loved ones. As there is great meaning to life, there is also tremendous meaning in giving and receiving care, and providing concern and support throughout the aging, sickness, dying and death processes of our dog.
